Open Sesame!

On November 23, 2003 Sesame Restaurant embarked on its maiden voyage as the latest creation of Sue Sein and Alex Lee, offering the finest in Chinese cuisine to the Montclair area. Sesame occupies the former space of the celebrated Blue Sky Café. The renovation phase of the project took roughly 3 months. Many wonderful design features of the Blue Sky Cafe dining spaces were retained. Suzanne Murphy of Fabiano Designs did all the color treatments in rich reds on the walls in the main dining room, private dining room, and party room. The effect was astoundingly warm and inviting. The feeling is rustic yet sophisticated. Along the way, many old friends and some new friends especially from the Departments in the Town of Montclair have graciously contributed their expertise and guidance towards the completion of this project. Our special thanks go to Messrs. J. Dean Paolucci, Philip Alampi, and Jerry Mosier for their vision.

Sesame is located at the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Seymour Street, in front of the Roberts Wellmont Theatre, which collectively share a place in this beautiful historical building. It occupies 3 storefronts from 398 - 402 Bloomfield Ave. The main entrance to the restaurant is now at 402 replacing the previous access at 398 Bloomfield Ave. There are 2 dining rooms and a party room, which have a total capacity of 120 patrons. An eclectic cooking style is employed with a focus on the Hunan and Szechuan genre.

All of the favorite standards are available on the menu, as well as the Chefs’ creations and market specials of the day for customers to choose from. Sesame is a BYO restaurant. You can conveniently purchase wine from the Spirits At The Sky next door, which houses many wonderful and uncommon wines at affordable prices. Sesame will also host a Sunday live jazz brunch, a tradition of the old Blue Sky Cafe, watch for details. Sesame will be delighted to tailor to the individual needs of our customers with lunch, diner, carry out, party rooms as well as catering services.

World-renowned Chef Deng directs the kitchen with more than 25 years of culinary experience as an Executive Chef both in the US and Mainland China. Chef Deng has a long history of creating and delivering innovative dishes at every restaurant he has been associated with. Sue Sein who oversees the operation is a seasoned manager with 20 years of restaurant expertise. Sue’s previous successes were her carryout restaurant, The Golden Chinese Gourmet on Grove Street some ten years ago and The Seasons in Clifton most recently. Sesame is the culmination of a career that leads Sue back to her roots in Montclair. Her long time dream of operating an elegant full service Chinese restaurant in Montclair is now a sparkling reality.

Sesame is open 7 days a week from 12 noon until 9:30pm on weekdays and
12 noon until 10:30pm on Friday and Saturday. Reservations recommended.
